Utah House Statement on Rep. Kevin Garn’s Resignation
2010 at 9:28 am | posted by Rep. Craig Frank 17 comments
Shortly after an early evening meeting at the Capitol Wednesday, where nearly 40 House Republicans met, the following statement related to former Rep. Kevin Garn’s resignation was released:
“We respect former Representative Garn’s decision to resign and believe it was appropriate. While not condoning the action, we wish for closure and healing for Cheryl Maher and the Garn family. We hope the people of Utah understand that members of the Legislature do not condone any illegal, unethical or ill-advised behavior.”

Your tellin us the members of the Legislature didn’t really give Rep. Garn a standing ovation for being a child predator?!?
But the media said you did, who are we to believe?
I’m sorry you guys were pulled into this mess and I hope the Speaker thinks things through better if there is a next time.
As for me, I’m disappointed that so many are out for blood from those of you caught in the crossfire.

Holy on the Hill says that they did so it must be true.
She is even calling for Clark’s head on a platter.

Of course you want closure. But, it is too late for that. Walker, Hughes, Killpack, Clark, Garn, Shurtleff…
This isn’t just about one incident, it is about a culture of corruption, and your Party needs to be held accountable.

I for one won’t white wash or carry the party line with this one. Clark is suppose to be a leader, a voice for the party. He let the members of his party down as well as his constituents and the people of Utah with his lack of leadership in a tough situation. I wonder if the teachers at the Roy middle school stood and gave an ovation for their disgraced colleague? Not so with the folks on the Hill. They want to be exempt from the laws they pass and as it looks like now, the backlash from their poor judgement.

This is really nice. The question is this: do you have any courage? You and holier than thou on the hill complain about the standing ovation, but did you have the courage to do anything last night in your secret meeting.
I didn’t think so.

I have a deep respect for all the legislators at the hill, Democrat or Republican, the work you all do is hard, fast and not always very much fun, and lets face it the little we pay you barely cover your expenses.
I just really think that it was in the utmost of poor taste.
1) That the speaker allowed the statement ON THE FLOOR
2) He then led the House in a standing ovation and honoring his work.
The fact is that floor is for OUR business and the fun festivities that happen are open to the public and are geared out rousing fun and camaraderie for a job well done at the end of session. It is NOT a place to air dirty laundry and beat the papers to the release of the information regarding his extreme lack of judgment and a CRIME against a minor.
I like you have had very good feelings and respect for former Rep. Garn and his family. But this ACT does over shadow the good, because we as people don’t elect people who prey on young women to hold these seats and had we known he would not have been able to hold the position he did.
This is an affront to the people of Utah and in my opinion, Speaker Clark showed a HUGE lack of leadership and SHOULD in my OPINION step down. The problem would be…Who then? Who is qualified in the house to be a strong leader?
The only name I can come up with is yours Rep. Frank. But even I am not sure could you lead in such financial times as well as Clark has? Certainly, if we go in order of line of succession it would need to be Dee? (Not sure I like that) Then we would need both a Majority Leader and whip? Could you do better? Who has the ability to step into Majority Leader position, Should it be Dee? Is there someone better?
Many questions, I wonder if this is going to be a hiccup? Or a sign that we as Utahan’s send more conservative Federal leaders to Washington as our house here gets turned on its head and we re-seat locally Democrats?
I certainly hope that is not the case and I hope people start by saying I would not have clapped had I only known!

It is only an affront to the small minded sanctimonious people of Utah who blow it out of proportion and make it one. I’d like to know exactly what qualifies Michelle to sit in moral judgment of others.
Another way to put it is “get down off the cross Michelle, we need the wood”.

JBT,
So you represent the “open minded people of Utah”? So, you represent those who feel Sexual Lewdness with a minor is OK? You also feel that using the Floor to confess is acceptable and that those guilty of Sexual Lewdness with a minor should recieve a standing ovation from our law makers? Most people I have met who hold those “open minded” opinions reside at the Utah State Prison and are secluded from the General Population for their own protection.
Count me in the “small minded” group…

JBT – I am not a martyr nor am I standing in judgment. He admitted to a sick offense with a minor child while he was an adult. Just Ditto the rest of my remarks to what Marc said! I don’t know Marc and I don’t need recurring but I certainly appreciate the remarks and I agree with him spot on!
I imagine you are in need of wood….seems you are on a witch hunt. None here, just a simple woman of God willing to stand and take my hits.
I will have you know, I have worked with Garn and this is anything but an easy thing to talk about or have an opinion on, but it’s pretty hard to not see where we should be standing on this, on the side of the child. (She wasn’t 40 then!)

That is rescuing not recurring!

Marc,
If your reading comprehension were as high as you level of piety you would understand that I was responding to Michelle’s comment that the standing ovation by Garn’s friends and colleagues honoring Garn’s public service was an AFFRONT TO THE PEOPLE OF UTAH.
Only a complete idiot would equate that with thinking that I believe sexual lewdness with a child is OK.
To take such an issue with a moment of recognition by applause of a legislative leader who has served the state for many years as to call that an AFFRONT TO THE PEOPLE OF UTAH because of an incident 25 years ago IS A SMALL MINDED AND SANCTIMONIOUS POSITION TO TAKE. ARE THERE ANY MORE QUESTIONS.
March 19th, 2010 at 10:19 pm
JBT,
Yes one more question. Do you really believe what you just wrote or were you merely being defensive? No need to answer…
I for one would like to applaud Killpack….not for his DUI but for his honorable resignation
Does lead one to wonder: Why did Garn choose the venue and manner in which he resigned?
March 20th, 2010 at 10:20 am
I have never made a statement to a conservative about his level of intelligence that I don’t believe is true.
That would be considered lying. But thanks for asking anyway.
Your equating me with someone who thinks sexual lewdness with a child is ok and linking me with convicted sex offenders in prison based upon my statement was not only idiotic, but patently offensive and insulting as well.
Defensive is not the right word. Pissed off is more like it.
March 21st, 2010 at 12:48 pm
JBT,
I was not asking about your statement towards me but your lack of good sense in taking up your argument towards those who feel a standing ovation on the floor and the venue which Garn was allowed to use to confess his wrong doing was inappropriate.
As for me, I don’t care what you say…your words or the crosses you choose to bare should be considered more carefully so as to avoid such comparsions to those you find offensive.
March 21st, 2010 at 7:14 pm
Crosses I choose to bare? What is the highest grade in school you completed Marc? Or were you home schooled?
Your argument that I should choose MY words more carefully so that YOU don’t make a stupid and offensive comparison of me to a sex offender is not an intellectually dishonest argument, IT IS A MORONICALLY DISHONEST ONE.
It is a fine example of “transfer” as well. “If my wife would only watch what she says, I wouldn’t have to slap her around so much” is an other example of what you said to me.
March 26th, 2010 at 1:29 pm
JBT’s comments about re-seating local democrats shows just how out of touch with reality he really is.
March 27th, 2010 at 2:31 pm
JJL9, what are you even talking about? Are you reading the same blog I am? Where did I mention “re-seating local Democrats”????????????
