State Senator Greg Bell…Utah’s New Lt. Governor

2009 at 11:05 am  |  posted by Rep. Craig Frank 2 comments

I know Greg Bell…he is an honorable man.  Senator Greg Bell will serve as Utah’s next Lt. Governor, was the announcement about an hour ago.  During a press conference/announcement from the Gold Room at the Utah State Capitol, “Soon-to-Be” Governor Gary Herbert announced his choice for “#2.”   We wish our new executive team the best as they work with the state legislature as they face one of the most difficult economic circumstances in Utah’s history.

With Greg Bell vacating his state senate seat, a mid-term vacancy election will occur in his senate district within the next few weeks…my guess.  Those whose names are floating out there:  Current House Majority Leader Kevin Garn, Former Representative (and “final 4″ Lt. Gov. candidate) Stuart Adams, and Current Representative Julie Fisher.

If Rep. Kevin Garn runs for Sen. Bell’s vacated seat and is elected/appointed through the mid-term vacancy process, this could create a “domino” effect in current House leadership seats.

It would be nice to see some Utah County folks move up in the House Leadership. Maybe Lockhart could move up, or another Utah County Representative could move into leadership. After being very strong in the recent past, the House and Senate leadership have no one from Utah County except Lockhart as Majority Assistant Whip right now. And, as everyone knows, the sun, moon and the stars revolve around Utah County! ;-)

I have known Mr. Bell for years. He is a wonderful person. Utah should be very proud to have him serve us. I am excited that we have someone who is such a outstanding person willing to volunteer to serve during a difficult time. He is one of the smartest and humble person I know. He is a gentle giant who will command support. Govenor Herbert knows how to pick them. I have a ton of respect for his judgement.
