Tell Me Something I Haven’t Already Heard & The Beauty of the Obvious.

That disclaimer stated: We’ve been speculating in our family for a long time that Jon M. Huntsman, Jr. might become the Ambassador to China…some day.  Why and How?  Well, three decades ago my older brother, Ron, served his LDS mission in Taiwan at the same time “Elder” Jon M. Huntsman, Jr. was there.  Their individual assignments and responsibilities in the Mission brought them together in the Mission Office simultaneously.  Since that time, we have observed the political track Huntsman has traveled for nearly thirty years…in my opinion, this appointment was inevitable.  This historical observation brought me to speculate that Huntsman might have something to do, in the future, of bringing the LDS faith to China.  Currently, China is not accessible to LDS missionaries.

President Obama’s A Smart Guy

It’s hard to believe that President Obama and his administration didn’t do a complete and thorough background (and character) check on Governor Huntsman before he was invited to become the new ambassador to China….it’s a given.  THEY KNEW THE GOVERNOR IS LDS & WHAT THAT MEANS.  This is NOT something I have single-handedly brought to the attention of the nation, Congress, or the Obama Administration.   And, rational people don’t really believe that it was my intent to “bring down” Governor Huntsman in regard to this appointment.

Look, Governor Huntsman has been running for president for a while now.  People know he’s LDS.  People know Mitt Romney is LDS, people know Harry Reid is LDS…it’s kinda hard to hide, if you’re walking the walk and talking the talk.  Most LDS people I know are kinda, biblically speaking, a “peculiar people.”   Huntsman’s been a high-profile “ambassador” to that area of the world on a number of occasions already—politically and religiously.  His responsibilities under Pres. George H. W. Bush already show he’s capable, respected, and LDS.  His actions, how he lives his life, have expressed his beliefs in the past, today, and no doubt in regard to his future responsibilities.

It wasn’t my intent to tell Governor Huntsman how to run his life…he’s done that OK by himself…without my help…imagine that!  I personally believe he’ll do a fantastic job as the Ambassador.  I wish him and his family well.  He’s spent a good portion of his life preparing for just such an assignment.

In Closing…

Those who are without faith, or religion, often take the opportunity to put down or minimize those who hold to their religions convictions and beliefs.  How many times have I heard from naysayers expressing secular opinions that it is imperative in my political life to separate Church and State.  (By the way, the “separation of church and state” is not a constitutional mandate.)  What “they” forget is Utah has a part-time legislature.  I’m not only an elected official…I’m also a human being, a husband, a father, a businessman, a taxpayer, a member of the LDS faith…and, sometimes I golf.

The problem with “their” thinking is:  First, my faith is bigger than any political position I can possible aspire to, and Second, my constituents have voted for me because I’m the person I have become because of my religion NOT in spite of it.

When I leave office I’ll take my integrity and my religion with me.  And, when I exit this world, I’ll take those same things with me.  Hopefully my luggage will weigh more than 50 lbs.!

  1. Voting constituent Says:

Thanks for this. I predict you will have no trouble getting re-elected, since this area is heavily LDS and we happen to like people who walk the walk, not just talk the talk and guess what – we want someone to REPRESENT us and our values. Kudos to you. Don’t let the liberals get you down.

  2. Taxpayer Says:

It’s time conservatives start pushing our agenda…liberals can give but they can’t take. They’ve shown this time and time again, the latest is their intolerance of those of us that believe marriage is between a man and a woman. Why is it that we are intolerant if we disagree with their views, but they are not intolerant when they disagree with ours?
They can’t have it both ways.

  3. Thomas Rasmussen Says:

    Taxpayer,
The conservatives having been pushing your agenda for quite some time now, and your agenda has won. Marriage being between only a man and a woman is the law of the land here in Utah. Our new Governor considers anything like gay marriage a closed issue, not even going to consider it (as if that really mattered). The gay-marriage liberals have been thoroughly defeated here in Utah. How can your agenda be pushed anymore? Do you want them to kowtow before you, and submit to your divine authority or something? Or apologize for ever disagreeing with you? Or is it you want to make homosexuality illegal here again, so you can throw them in prison as well, or maybe deport them to Sodom and Gomorrah? What more do you want beyond total victory?

  4. Jeff Hurley Says:

If you represented any where other than Utah, because of your most resent comments you would not have a job tomorrow. The majority, not the Mormon minority, would want you resignation.

  5. Rep. Craig Frank Says:

    Jeff: Exactly.

  6. Thomas Rasmussen Says:

A good representative also tries to represent well the minorities among his constituents, not just the majority and its biases.

  7. Rep. Craig Frank Says:

Thank you for your definition of “a good representative.” Does that mean I’m responsible for giving special attention to the convicted child molesters and registered sex offenders in my district?

  8. Thomas Rasmussen Says:

Craig, do you consider the gay community hardened criminals, or do you just think they shouldn’t exist, that their concerns are nothing, and that they need to be condemned? How about the immigrant community of which my wife is a part? I don’t like it when people say my wife is a part of a Satanic invasion of America as certain Utah County Republicans have insinuated.

  9. Thomas Rasmussen Says:

Craig, you represent in many ways the forces that want to forcefully get rid of my family. You represent the people who condemn my friends to Hell. I am not Mormon. My family, my friends, and I are your minorities.

  10. Thomas Rasmussen Says:

And now that I’m done eating dinner, I’ll answer you specific question – Does that mean I’m responsible for giving special attention to the convicted child molesters and registered sex offenders in my district?

    Yes.

You need to help them stay out of trouble, while recognizing that they are still a part of our society, and you need to protect them from vigilantes, who want to murder them. You need to help them be successful members of our community, not just find new unique ways to feed the insecurities of our society and ostracize them more.

“Disclaimer: Underthedome.org, is not in any way, shape, or form an official website of…any one but me. Not a dime of the costs associated with this site are paid for with taxpayer dollars”.

If the website represents you as an individual, why then is it called “Under the Dome” and has a picture at the top depicting the dome of the Utah State Capitol? “Under the dome” is where the legislature meets to conduct the official business of the state. Your use of this name and image strongly implies that what you write on these pages represents the voice of the legislative branch of the government of the state.

You can’t have it both ways Rep. Frank. If you don’t want readers to misinterpret the source and intent of your comments, you may want to choose another title and picture for your blog. Might I suggest “Under the Toilet Seat”. That would be more descriptive of much of the content I read here.
