A Note From My Neighbor…JJL9

JJL9 is a neighbor of mine. This morning he sent to me the following thread on FaceBook…thought I’d share it:
Professor Christensen said that Huntsman “likely will go out of his way to avoid being seen as promoting the LDS Church.”
I understand where he is coming from in one sense. Obviously he can’t be seen as exploiting his position and blatantly pushing Mormonism on the Chinese, but that is obvious and it’s obvious that you didn’t mean that.
He goes on to say that simply living his religion will be enough to elevate the LDS church.
When the brethren continually mandate that we share the gospel with those around us, including those with whom we work, they don’t mean to JUST be a good example. They actually mean to share the gospel. That’s why the say to share the gospel. It probably starts with being an example, but it doesn’t end there.
“Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in Heaven.” Matthew 5:15-16
Back to Craig…These are the kind of people I represent! What a great job!

Thank you JJ,
You hit the nail on the head!
Hey, maybe Rep. Frank is actually REPRESENTING his constituants. I sincerely wish every politican, whatever their faith, would share their views. Not only political views.

Me too.

Somewhere, Jon Huntsman Jr., in the hopes of the US Senate actually confirming his appointment as ambassador, is just wishing you would shut your yap.

“These are the kind of people I represent!”
Just the ones that agree with you, huh?

Okay…so let’s hope (soon-to-be) Ambassador Huntsman requests that his first official meeting with Premier Wen Jiabao be opened with a word of prayer, hands him a Book of Mormon, and invites him to take the missionary discussions. After all, he shouldn’t hold anything back even though he is there in his official capacity as Ambassador of the United States. “Let your light shine” and all that.
I’m sure that will go over great with the Chinese, and the Lord will be so pleased when Huntsman is summarily canned and shipped back to the U.S., thereby ending his brief little mission to China.
The great irony of all of this is that the negative attention Rep. Frank’s comments are generating will almost certainly cause Huntsman to do as Prof. Christensen predicts–that is, go out of his way to NOT appear to be preaching.
I guess everybody wins. Rep. Frank gets to think out loud, his constituents (or at least a few of them) get to shout, “Amen!”, critics of Utah County provincialism get to have a field day, and we LDS who are embarrassed by his comments can rest assured that Huntsman is smart enough not to do what Rep. Frank wants him to.
I think that worked out well.

Yep, and Jim you’ll always be mad, a great way to live your life…

Taxpayer, apparently you’ll always be judgemental with respect to folks you don’t even know.
And for the record, I’m embarrassed, not mad.

JimW, I could not agree with you more.

Fortunately, Governor Huntsman is already smart enough not to be taking any advice from Rep. Frank and the people he represents (the ones who agree with him). Huntsman has skills in diplomacy and international and cultural relations. He will be fine. This little tempest in a teapot will continue simmer here as long as Mormons insist in their supreme ignorance “every minute a missionary”. And will become full-blown again when a Mormon decides to run for president.
By the way, JimW, how does your employer feel about your proselytizing, praying, and handing out BOMs at work?

Pardon me, that comment should have been directed no to JimW, but taxpayer. JimW seems to understand there is a time and place for everything. Sorry about that JimW

Ok so let me see if I’ve got this right….
Jim gets on Rep. Frank’s personal bog (yes politicians are people) blasts him for saying out loud what he believes (because it “embarrasses” him, poor baby) and I’m the judgmental one (and yes, I make judgments every day).
And how exactly is Jim referring to “Utah County provincialism ” , “with respect to folks you don’t even know” any less judgmental than me assuming that because he’s “embarrassed” (during his rant) that he’s mad?
They word hypocrite comes to mind!

“Yep, and Jim you’ll always be mad, a great way to live your life…”
Speaks for itself. I’d say you’re the one who sounds angry. My comments addressed the issue. All you could come up with was a silly personal attack.
Oh, and by the way, I live in Utah County. I know the territory quite well.
Thanks for playing, Taxpayer.
