Call a Special Session, NOW!

With the recent announcement by the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT)…it’s time for Governor Huntsman to call the Legislature into Special Session to address the current transportation funding crisis, NOW!

Following the same “logic” that drove the Legislature into Special Session recently to address the approximately $300M budget shortfall…this transportation “crisis” has a pricetag of $3.9B  Let’s do the prudent thing and fix the problem, NOW!

What revenue shortfalls calls for this special session? Are people buying less petrol? Are fewer trucks coming into Utah?

UDOT is an incredibly well funded agency with funds coming from multiple sources. Are they playing you for a fool, or do they have a legitimate concern? I ask that you act prudently. BTW, I’m not expecting it, but I hope you do.

Maybe the salaries of some of our highly-paid UDOT executives could be cut to help fund some of these projects. And maybe, just maybe, UDOT should learn that the taxpayers are not some bottomless pit that can be tapped anytime revenues decrease. After all, most of us have seen our real net take home pay go down at a greater clip than UDOT’s revenues.

Yes, many of the projects are direly needed. But many taxpayers are doing without some of the things they desperately would like to have as well. It should be belt-tightening time at UDOT, not begging for more money time.

I don’t understand why we don’t shift transportation funding entirely to a gasoline tax, or to tolls for usage of the roads. That would force the costs of road usage to those who actually use the roads, decrease the massive subsidy that heavy road users get, and likely decrease air pollution as well.

The current crisis is a perfect time to make the switch. And if we don’t shift road funding entirely to a gas tax or toll roads, how in the world are we going to fund the urgently needed road projects here in Utah County? Our economy could be seriously harmed otherwise.
