FOR or AGAINST…Educate Yourself

FOR or AGAINST VOUCHERS???  Between now and Tuesday, November 6, do yourself a huge favor and do ONE THING:

READ THE BILL!!!  (Or, bills that create the Educational Voucher Law).  Review and UNDERSTAND what you are voting for.

HB148 and HB174.

The bill language is relatively easy to read.  HB 148 is approximately 13 pages and HB174 is approximately 10 pages (and somewhat redundant to HB148).

If you’re one of my constituents (House District 57) please call me with any questions…the answers are simple and won’t take a lot of time.

Read them both a while back. Anything in particular you want people to focus on?

I found in my discussions witha variety of indviduals that the greatest poins of confusion are two things.

First, the Voucher program is “means tested.” That refers to the “sliding scale” for the amount of money a student is given (between $500 to $3,000) depends upon the houshold income of the students family. Student’s who’s household income is lower make more on the voucher than students who’s families make more. However, everybody takes some amount–unless you are already attending a private school, then you have been “grandfathered” out of the program.

Second, this program is primarily paid from the General Fund not the Education Fund. 100% of Utahn’s Personal and Corporate income tax goes to fund public education. his money constitutes the Education Fund. The dollars that are paying for the Voucher program are General Fund dollars, which come from Sales Tax Revenues. IT’s NOT THE SAME POT OF MONEY.

My plea is to have the voting public read the bill independant of all the other information FOR or AGAINST.
