FREE MAPS…Only $70,000!

UDOT (Utah Department of Transportation) has produced a FREE map…at the cost of approximately $70,000.  (I’m sorry, that seems a little oxymoronic.)  And, even though that only figures out to be about 7 cents per taxpayer…it’s still a taxpayer/government funded program.  And, government is never…FREE!

Shameful. Why should 70,000 taxpayers get maps when that money would buy almost two legislative trips to China?

I believe the D-News article said $70,000 produced 500,000 maps. (I’m just worried about the other 2 million citizens of Utah that aren’t going to get a map, OR 500,000 taxpayers who paid and won’t recieve…all perfectly deserving, I’m sure.)

And, the China trip thing was beyond the decision-making authority of 95% of the Legislature.

You’re right–500,000. That’s what I get for typing late at night. Your second comment does raise a question in my mind: Who makes the decision to spend taxpayer dollars to send legislators on an expedition like that? Is there a committee or something? It may have been mentioned in some articles, but it doesn’t come to mind.

$70,000 doesn’t sound like alot of money considerng the size of Utah’s Tourist Industry. I remember driving from New Orleans to Alabama. I stopped in the “Welcome Center” at the Louisiana/Mississippi border to use their facilities. A very polite older lady proceeded talk to me about what there was to do in Mississippi and gave me a free map and some ideas as far as sight-seeing along my journey. I ended spending a few extra hours checking out some of the recommended sights and admittedly spent more money in Mississippi than I would have without that stop.

Also, I think there is the notion of using new maps to sell the new brand for the state, “Life Regulated”, I mean “Life Elevated.” Whatever that means, I suppose use of fee maps is as good a way as any to promote it.
