Ok, so … I can’t tell. Are you making fun of the Obese kid? Or are you making fun of the media for pointing out that the Republican legislature is afraid to weigh in on child nutrition?

Seriously, why are you making fun of the big kid?

  2. Rep. Craig Frank Says:

My wife points out that although this is just my dumb blog (weblog, an on-line journal of sorts), there are a few people who occasionally look at it. In no way was I trying to call attention to the rapidly increasing obesity problem we have in Utah.

And, as a side note, when did it become the government’s responsibility to manage our children’s eating habits and nutrition??? The problem is, parents are willing to abdicate their responsibilites to society (education, nutritional, religious, etc.) and expect government to bail them out and create social entitlement programs to “fix” society’s “ills” when it becomes “too hard” to finish what they started. (Which responsibility, by the way, never ends…so I’m told.)

Year after year, the left-wing wackos bring their mandatory “child nutrition” bills to the Legislature. And, year after year they get shot down because the majority of the State Legislature and those who elect us still believe the primary responsibility for what goes in our kids mouths is still the job of those kids parents.

So, let’s all just do our jobs.

My son just reminded me that I’ll be making his decisions for him the next few years…I’m OK with that…I call that good parenting.

First of all, thanks so much for removing the link to the obese teenager after you made your fat lady joke. Nice duck and cover, Rep. I’m glad I have screen shots.

2nd, If schooling is mandated for children, doesn’t it make some kind of sense for there to be some kind of nutritional guideline? What’s so “whacko” about that? Do you really think Senator Pat Jones is a whacko? Really?

Considering all the different “morality legislation” you guys keep trying to cram down our throats and the throats of out children, it would seem to me that, you might consider the fact nutritional food, as opposed to the preservative-filled crap in a lot of schools, would make them better able to pay attention to your Old Testament brand of messaging.

  4. Voice of Utah Says:

JM Bell raises an interesting question: What is the difference between, say, proposing mandatory “character” education for children, nutrition for the mind, so to speak, vs. nutrition for the body?

  5. Rep. Craig Frank Says:

    Mr. Bell:

I made no specific reference to any of my legislative colleagues. On the contrary, I made specific references to bills “(brought) to the legislature” year after year. So-called advocacy groups are often the genesis of these types of “nutrition” bills.

You made reference to Senator Jones, Mr. Bell, not I. Anyone who is acquainted with Pat knows she is a thoughtful and gracious lady.
